antonaym

antonaym (ān'tə-nām), noun: A name that describes the opposite of the person who has it.

I decided to make up another word. It's a combination of "antonym" and "name." It sounds more fun and interesting than "misnomer," doesn't it?

The reason I thought of this was Melinda Doolittle, a perfect example of the antonaym. In fact, I will put her picture next to the definition if I ever make a dictionary of the words I concoct. It would, admittedly, be a very brief dictionary.

Ms. Doolittle is, without a doubt, the best performer I have seen on American Idol. Actually, I think she is one of the best singers I've heard, ever. This week she sang "I'm a Woman" and when she started I thought, "What an odd, over-done song to sing. This will be boring." By the end, I was smiling at how great she was. I went back and replayed it and smiled just as much.

Melinda transforms familiar songs into something spectacular. It'll be fun to watch and root for her. There are other contestants I like as well, but Melinda certainly has a rare level of talent. If you haven't watched her, you should. Even without a neck (the most common comment about her other than how great a singer she is), her performances are captivating.

I wanted to give other examples in this post of people with antonayms. Then it hit me: Ryan Seacrest has an antonaym, too!
