This photo was taken yesterday. My cousin, Dina, and I were born the same year, and we each graduated from high school in 1987. That's right--we're "that" old. I think we look pretty good, though. My high school had a 20th reunion to commemorate (that 20 years has passed, not that Dina and I look pretty good). My reunion was this past weekend. I wasn't planning on going but then a few things happened that told me I was supposed to be there. Primarily, just a few weeks ago my dad ran into Laura, one of the girls I was closest to during high school. She told him she and some of my girlfriends were going to attend. Laura and I were inseparable during the 11th grade. I reminded her at the reunion how our English teacher used to refer to us as "Nitrogen and Glycerin" because we were fine separate but trouble together. We talked in class a lot.
I arrived at the reunion, but after talking to a few people I didn't find the "girls" I really, really, really wanted to see. Then, all of a sudden, 2 of them were right next to me saying hi: Patty, who was a friend from 8th grade through high school and college (we both went to BC) and Kammie, who was always a kind and sweet person. They looked great. So did Laura. After a bit, we were chatting it up like no time had passed. People would tell me things from high that I knew I must have said or done, but didn't remember. Then, there were things I remembered about others that I was sure they'd recall. Like my friend, Jack, being mad about my Dave Righetti essay. He didn't even remember that!!!
I'm very glad I went to the reunion. I'm getting together with some of my re-acquaintances again soon. It was nice to know that people I spent lots of time with, but haven't seen or spoken to in over a decade, were interested in seeing me again, too. :-)
Most people who approached me said one of two things, with great enthusiasm: (a) You look EXACTLY the same! or (b) You look TOTALLY different! I wasn't sure what to make of that but I think in both cases people meant it in a good way. I'm not sure how people could think 2 completely opposite things. Dina hypothesized that the ones who said I looked the same were looking at my face while the ones who said I looked different were commenting on my style, hair and clothing. In that latter case, I certainly hope I look TOTALLY different.
