My cousin's daughter, Amanda, had her 7th birthday party on Saturday. In a magazine, Amanda had seen a picture of cupcakes made by pouring cake batter into ice cream cones. The cones are baked and then decorated with frosting and candy flowers. My aunt took giant gumdrops and carved them. Those are the bigger white and yellow flowers in this picture.

We also had some gummy lifesavers to work with. I started experimenting by carving those and stretching some of the green ones to make stems and leaves. The results can be seen atop the cones in the foreground of this picture.

Amanda was very impressed. Her brother even said I deserved two goodnight kisses for my efforts, which means he must have been impressed, too. It took a few hours to create these decorations for 20 cupcakes. It was fun, though, going through the process and chatting in the kitchen while we worked.

Fifteen kids came over for the birthday party. Fortunately, Amanda's mom knew to have different things for the kids to do. There were 3 activities: decorating a picture frame, decorating a little clay flower pot and bowling in the garage with a basketball and pins made out of soda bottles. These things occupied most of the 2 hour party.

When it came time for the cake, my cousin brought out the ice cream cones. She put a candle in one for Amanda. Then the kids devoured the works of art we made. That took about 5 minutes.
