In honor of today's Super Bowl, and to prove Brad wrong that I won't post anything about sports, I have two bowl stories to share.First, in 1986 my mom and I were home alone and watched the Super Bowl together. You'll recall that the Patriots played the Bears. I remember that the Patriots played awfully, and it was an embarrassing loss for them. The other thing I remember about that game is that the Bears hyped it by making a rap song called "The Super Bowl Shuffle." Not that I would be the authority on such things, but I don't recall any other team making a song about how great they would be in a championship game. That song was popular, though. It was on the radio constantly, and they even played it at a dance at my high school!
My second story is about the Orange Bowl. In 1991, I was at a friend's house on New Year's Day, watching the game with him and his dad. The announcer was annoying me because I thought he was taking the game too seriously, favoring one team over the other. The reason I concluded this was that he kept calling one team "the enemy." After I had heard it dozens of times, I finally had had enough. I expressed out loud that it was ridiculous that the announcer had to keep referring to one team as the enemy. "Nat," my friend said, "Colorado's running back is named 'Bienemy'." Oops. See why I avoid sports talk?
