In my January 31 post, the one with the photo of my mom & me, I noted how outdated and awful my glasses (and I!) looked. I decided to write something so that I could use a better photo of me in my most recent glasses. I like the way these glasses look on me. A friend told me I looked like Lisa Loeb and I was flattered since she's reasonably cute. I have worn glasses since high school. I think it was in 11th grade (it could have been 12th), but I distinctly remember crying when I found out I needed them. At first I only wore them to see the board. I bought this awful pair that was clear and translucent lilac with some sparkles inside the plastic. Yikes!
My favorite story about glasses is from high school, but it involves someone else's glasses. I was in my calculus class, and this guy I had a crush on (our valedictorian) was in the class, too. He had his glasses on, and he was wearing suspenders. Suspenders were actually in fashion in the 80's, so he didn't resemble Steve Urkel or anything. If you don't believe me regarding suspenders in the 80s, check out Billy Crystal in the Pictionary scene from When Harry Met Sally.
During that calculus class, one of this guy's suspenders popped off and hit his glasses. This knocked out BOTH lenses. When the class realized what had happened, we were all in an uproar. I know this makes it sound even more like this guy was a real-life Urkel. I swear, he wasn't. He was cute and very smart and a bit--just a bit--geeky. I think he became a doctor. I hope he wears contacts. Oh, and I hope he isn't a surgeon.
