what's inside

I've been thinking about what each of us is at our core. How do you know what you are made of and what qualities do you possess fundamentally? When you face a great challenge, you can often figure that out. Amidst change and uncertainty, you think about who you are and who you want to be. Something life-changing happens like a death, a loss, a major disappointment . . . and you are forced to decide who you want to be in getting through it.

When you go through the day-to-day existence of a routine you can lose sight of what strength you have. Smaller things seem overwhelming because they aren't in perspective. Maybe you can't really know your basic elements until they are tested. Or maybe you know what you are--honest, loyal or loving--but you can't prove it to yourself until you're given the chance.

There's a severe limit on our ability to make sense of all the things people suffer in this life. Acknowledging that is tough. If changes happen that are caused by someone rather than by uncontrollable circumstances, it amplifies our need to find meaning. Even then, meaning may elude us. Your ability to love and forgive someone who caused you harm will take time. But keeping that as your goal will make you stronger until you get there.
